2018 ICC Rankings - Virat Kohli becomes the second batsman in the history of the game to cross the 900-point mark concurrently in Tests and ODIs Tuesday Feb 20,2018

Virat Kohli hits new record, crosses 900-point mark in Tests and ODIs rankings

India captain Virat Kohli became the only second batsman in the history of the game to cross the 900-point mark concurrently in Tests and ODIs, while pacer Jasprit Bumrah grabbed the joint top position among bowlers in the latest ICC ODI player rankings released on Tuesday Feb 20,2018

Virat Kohli has become the only second batsman after South Africa’s AB de Villiers to attain the 900-point mark concurrently in both formats and one among only five to have crossed 900 points in both forms of the game. Now Virat Kohli has 912 and 909 in Tests and ODI's

The 29-year-old consolidated his top position with 558 runs in the 5-1 series win over South Africa during which he slammed three centuries.

Kohli thus moved ahead of Brian Lara in the all-timers’ list, having also overtaken him in the all-timers’ Test list last month. He is now seventh in the ODI list of all-time rankings that is led by Vivian Richards with 935 points.

The India captain is now a good 22 points clear of Sachin Tendulkar, whose ODI career high of 887 points came against Zimbabwe in January 1998. Kohli’s aggregate is the best since Brian Lara reached 911 points in March 1993

Virat Kohli is First Batsman in 27 Years to Scale Peak 900 in ODIs

India skipper Virat Kohli has made it a habit to break records and the latest one is special.

Kohli has received the highest batting ratings for ODIs in the latest rankings revealed by the ICC and he sits on the top with 909 points — the highest for any player in the last 27 years.

Virat Kohli’s 909 rating points are also the highest in the last 27 years since Australia’s Dean Jones in 1991, who back then had earned 918 points.

He's just the second player after AB de Villiers to have over 900 points in Tests and ODIs at the same time.

Interestingly, Kohli is the only batsman to find a place in the Top 3 slots across all formats. While he sits on the top position in ODIs, he is second in the Test rankings behind Australia’s Steve Smith (947) with 912 points. In T20Is, Kohli is third behind Babar Azam (786) and Aaron Finch (784) with 776 points.

Kohli’s rating as per the latest rankings is the highest of any player since Australia's Dean Jones in 1991. Vivian Richards (935 in 1985), Zaheer Abbas (931 in 1983), Greg Chappell (921 in 1981), David Gower (919 in 1983) and Javed Miandad (910 in 1987) have received a higher rating than Kohli. He is the first Indian player to go into the 900 points mark.

Kohli has hit a purple patch in the Rainbow Nation as he now has 4 centuries and 2 fifties to his name after 10 games (3 Tests, 6 ODIs and 1 T20I). But more interestingly, he is just 130 runs away from amassing 1000 runs on a single tour. Kohli has 870 runs from 13 innings at an average of 87.00 and a strike rate of 82.38. The India skipper has hit 7 sixes and 91 boundaries.

West Indian legend Vivian Richards is the only batsman in the history of the gentleman’s game to score 1000 runs on an international tour. Richards achieved the feat in 1976 when he amassed 1045 runs in England. While Richards had scored 216 runs in ODIs, he hit 829 in four Test matches.

In comparison, Kohli scored 286 runs in the three-match Test series with a hundred and a fifty, 558 runs in the 6 ODI innings with 3 hundreds and a fifty and 26 runs in the first T20I at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday. Considering his form, it could well be a cakewalk to another milestone for the India skipper

Who decides the rankings? Who is in the panel?

No one. No human is involved in the decision making.

In the words of ICC, “the performances are ranked using a points based system which is worked out by doing a series of calculations leading to a sophisticated moving average. Players are rated on a scale of 0 to 1000 points. If a player’s performance is improving on his past record, his points increase; if his performance is declining his points will go down. The value of each player’s performance within a match is calculated using an algorithm, a series of calculations (all pre-programmed) based on various circumstances in the match. There is no human intervention in this calculation process, and no subjective assessment is made.”
