2017-18 Premier League - Arsene Wenger to leave Arsenal F.C. after 22 years as manager at the end of t his season Friday April 20,2018

Arsene Wenger will step down as Arsenal manager at the end of the current season, the Frenchman said in a statement issued by the Premier League club on Friday April 20,2018. Wenger had one more year left on his contract.

"After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season," he said.

"I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years. I managed the club with full commitment and integrity. I want to thank the staff, the players, the Directors and the fans who make this club so special.

"I urge our fans to stand behind the team to finish on a high. To all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club. My love and support for ever," he added.

The Frenchman signed a new contract at Arsenal at the end of last season but the club have shown little progress as they sit sixth in the league, knocked out of the FA Cup and unsure of Champions League qualification for next season.

The club's inconsistent performance led to speculation that Wenger's 22-year reign could come to an end after the current season.

The 68-year-old Frenchman has won the Premier League title three times and the FA Cup seven times with Arsenal since taking over in October 1996, but has faced growing disillusionment from fans in recent years
